Superfood Spotlight on the Crenshaw Melon
The crenshaw melon is a cross between a cantaloupe and casaba melon. It is considered one of the sweetest varieties in the melon family but stands out from it’s siblings as it is also slightly spicy. It closely resembles a cantaloupe in color but the shape and texture differ as the crenshaw melon contains a hard yellow-green rind and is mostly spherical in shape with a flattened bottom and a stem at the top.
The superfood qualities of the crenshaw melon are represented by Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Calcium and Iron. It also provides a good amount of water and fiber which is helpful for digestive regulation.
The crenshaw melon is available July through September but peak season is August through September so now is a perfect time to gear up and give this Honey Citrus Melon Salad with Ginger Mint Dressing recipe a try.
