Farmer’s Market Season is Back!
It’s that time of year again - the farmer’s markets are back! This gives us the unique opportunity to get our produce from a nearby farm – which means less carbon emissions from transportation, less chemical exposure, and the comfort of knowing where your produce is coming from. The farmer’s market is a beautiful place but can be overwhelming for us beginners. Continuing reading to learn about best tips for tackling the farmer’s market with success.
Do a lap before you put anything in your basket. This will allow you to visualize everything available and get you comfortable with the farmer’s market environment.
Plan your meals ahead of time. When you show up with a game plan, this will make the farmer’s market less intimidating. Since there is a finite supply at the farmer’s market, be prepared that they might run out of items – have some back up options or substitutions ready (especially if going later in the day). Going with a list gives us the best chance at using all the food we purchase for the week, which will help eliminate food waste.
To plan your meals according to what will be available at the market – it’s best know what foods are in-season. Spring produce includes arugula, asparagus, collards, peas, rhubarb, spinach, strawberries. Summer produce includes all the spring produce, and – apples, beans, beets, berries, broccoli, cabbage, cherries, corn, cucumbers, herbs, kale, lettuce, nectarines, okra, onions, peppers, tomatoes, squash.
Expand your palate and try one new food each time you go. Talk to the farmers and find out their favorite ways to prepare this newfound food. This is the best way to learn how to cook foods we’ve never prepared before. And who knows…you could find your new go-to produce this way.
