Cow What!
Here I am preaching plant-based eating once again. Eating plant-based is all the rage, as it should be since it makes perfect sense for your health and wallet, but have you ever thought about the amount of methane gas emissions that are caused by animal agriculture? Or have you ever thought about the amount of water and resources it takes to raise an animal?
Cows and other ruminant livestock like sheep and goats have a forestomach containing microbes called methanogens which are capable of digesting coarse plant material like grass. As a result, methane gas is released into the atmosphere. While carbon dioxide emissions from cars are a leading cause in climate change, methane emissions caused by cows are 23-34 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
I’m touching on this subject as you may have seen that Burger King started altering cow’s diets in effort to reduce their methane emissions and climate change. While this is a tactful marketing strategy I do believe there is a takeaway. Plant-based diets are powerful mechanisms to not only achieve optimal health but help save the planet one moo at a time.
